Meet Dave Williams

Dave Williams

What do you do at the Co-op and how long have you been working here? I’ve been representing the front end crew, cashier division, since October of last year.

What brought you to the Co-op? Optimistic ideals and the smell of positive opportunities led me all the way from Missouri to the heart of this valley.

What do you like best about your job?Other than my love for people and open communication within the workplace, my overall pride of being part of such a great and positive force in this community is the absolute best part of my job.

How has working at the Co-op affected your life?I started working at the Co-op almost as soon as I moved here, and the instant acceptance and understanding I continue to receive continues to enrich my life. My friendships with co-workers and customers extend beyond the workplace, which is wonderful, and I have become more and more appreciative of seasonal eating habits due to the availability of locally grown produce. Eating what the land is producing when it is producing it can be an exceptionally grounding and balancing force.

What are some of your favorite products at the Co-op?My ever-expanding and changing list currently includes: kumquats, honey tangerines, watermelon radishes, daikon, sunchokes, Tempt brand hemp ice cream (coconut-lime flavored), Pacifica coffee, sesame tempeh salad from the deli, anything coconut, dried figs, dried mango, etc!

What do you like to do outside of work? ? I enjoy making music, DJing, surfing, teaching and practicing Kundalini Yoga, making movies, watching movies, reading, writing, exploring, dreaming, spending time with the cutest girl ever, cooking, cycling, meditating, dancing, and staring at the moon.

Where did you grow up/where have you lived in your life?I’ve lived in Missouri and Illinois for most of my life, but have had short stints in Minnesota, New Mexico, and Texas. Hawaii or Costa Rica may be next. Hmmm....

Tell us something about yourself others might not know. Two of my biggest childhood dreams have already come true. One: to play the accordion. Two: to take up surfing. Coming from the midwest, the latter seemed impractical...until now. I’m also a bit obsessed with astral projection and spirit animals. Oh, and some know me as ‘Doctor Ellis’.

What music is playing in your car, home, or head? Björk, the Drums, Beirut, Panda Bear, We Are Like the Spider, Neon Indian, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Koji Kondo, OOIOO, Dick Dale, DAT Politics, Mr. Oizo.

If you had three wishes...

1. We wouldn’t have to sleep but could still dream and access our unconscious minds at will.
2. Fear, greed and hatred would all be replaced with an unrelenting urge to love and help others.
3. We were more intuitive and could communicate directly to all beings, organisms, and forces of nature.

Where are some of your favorite travel destinations?
The Oregon coast, Angel Island, the City Museum in St. Louis, anyplace near an ocean, and anyplace new or near loved ones.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?I see myself traveling by sea plane to distant lands with several of my favorite people. We will be filming documentaries of the utmost importance across the world, and spreading positive vibes to all we meet. Surfing famous foreign surf breaks and jamming with people from all over the world will be a plus!

What are your top 5 favorite things about Corvallis?
1. I can walk or ride my bike anywhere. 2. I’m about an hour from the ocean, Portland, and Eugene. Perfect. 3. The Saturday market in the summertime! 4. All the close hikes. 5. First Alternative Co-Op! Duhhh. (6. The Library!)

What is one thing you would change at the Co-op?I would love to see dried cantaloupe sold in bulk. It’s wildly delectable! If you haven’t tried it, or have and share my love for it, please fill out a product request form for it. You won’t be disappointed.

What do you do at the Co-op and how long have you been working here?I am the Kitchen Assistant Manager and have worked at the Co-op as staff for two years. I started as an Owner Worker in Produce, around 1993 when I joined the Co-op. I also did some demo stints, worked in recycling and I was the original Bag Share Lady. I used fabric remnants from my parent’s Portland drapery shop, designed, sewed and stitched the labels onto the bags. After hundreds of bags disappeared, Michele A and I regretted not placing a deposit on them. I occasionally see one around town—after all these years they look pretty ratty.

What brought you to the Co-op?
We moved to the coast range to Burnt Woods Oregon (from Portland) to live the good life with our two kids in 1993. We visited the intentional community that was forming on Shot Pouch Road for six months before moving there. We joined the Co-op to celebrate our commitment to our new community.

What do you like best about your job?
I love the creativity and inspiration that is cooked up everyday in the kitchen. I work with talented foodies.

How has working at the Co-op affected your life?
Everything I’ve done up until now has led me to the next thing so being in the midst of this work experience I won’t probably know that answer for a couple of years. It’s nice to have good benefits, which is a first for me in over 20 years!

What are some of your favorite products at the Co-op? I am a fan of our hot bar, soups, salads and sandwiches. Our bakery makes the best desserts. Our Produce departments at both stores are the prettiest in Corvallis.

What do you like to do outside of work?
I love to camp, play Scrabble, go to estate and garage sales, garden, read, and write. Someday I hope to sew again. I did that for a living and burned out on it.

Where did you grow up/where have you lived in your life? I grew up in Portland, Oregon and lived there the first 35 years of my life before settling in the mid Willamette Valley. We lived in Burnt Woods for three years and for the past 14 years we have lived in Corvallis.

What music is playing in your car, home, or head?
Steely Dan, The Beatles, Bingo and Billy K.

Tell us something about yourself others might not know.
My family on the Weaver side settled in Suver, just north of Corvallis in the early 1900’s and established a Mennonite community and school (OSU owns my great grandfather Menno Weaver’s homestead near Berry Creek in Suver). For over 60 years we have held the annual Weaver reunion at Avery Park in July.

If you had three wishes...
Three-day weekends for all, the cessation of red light runners, and for cell phones to be used for emergencies only.

Where are some of your favorite travel destinations?
I would like to camp across the US again. House Rock Campground.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Autographing one of my books that I finally finished, and exclaiming over a rose I accidentally bred. A girl can dream.

What are your top 5 favorite things about Corvallis?
First Alternative Co-op, birding opportunities, da Vinci Days, short proximity to peaceful nature settings, the miles of bike paths and hiking trails.

What is one thing you would change at the Co-op?
I would level all the floors and parking lot at the South Store. I am surprised more food hasn’t pitched off our carts while transporting food from our kitchen to the deli.

What brought you to the Co-op? The summer after my sophomore year in high school I was super bored so my mom told me to go and apply for an owner-worker position at the Co-op. How has working at the Co-op affected your life? What are some of your favorite products at the Co-op? I LOVE local tomatoes, GT Kombucha, McK Ranch Ground Beef for tacos, Vitaspelt pretzels, Jane Carter Hair Solutions, and lots of other things. The list is really too long for this interview. I am a big foodie.

Meet Kirsten Nugent

Kirsten

What do you do at the Co-op and how long have you been working here?
I have worked here 8 years. I started as Closer and I still am – which means I go through and count and record the daily transactions at the registers. Other jobs have been added since then. I do payroll and am back-up for accounts payable.

What brought you to the Co-op?
A friend told me about the owner-worker program, and I was looking for work and I liked the Co-op.

What do you like best about your job?
I like the actual work. Which surprised me at first. I was a self-employeed furniture maker for over 25 years and I didn’t picture myself as an office-sitting-at-a-desk worker. But I like it. I like getting all the parts to the job, putting them together and - hopefully - ending up with the right numbers and results. Also the flexibility in my time and of course my great co-workers.

How has being a Co-op employee changed your life?
I am more aware of healthy foods and the environment.

What are some of your favorite products at the Co-op?
The fresh local produce, Cherry Larabars, sprouted almonds in bulk, Equal Exchange dark chocolate bars, carrot flax seed muffins from Feast Alternative and on and on ……………

What do you like to do outside of work?
Hiking in the woods, reading, gardening, knitting, playing cards, tennis.

Where did you grow up & where have you lived in your life?
I grew up in a small town just north of Copenhagen, Denmark. When I turned 18 I moved to Montreal and lived there almost 2 years. Then to Vancouver for a short time. Then San Francisco and Berkeley for a year. Then Venice in Los Angeles for 2 years. Then finally settling in the Corvallis area.

Tell us something about yourself others might not know.
Well, I can think of a few things - but it will take at least a couple of Mojitos to make me tell.
